Rumpole of the Bailey is a British TV series written and created by John Mortimer starring Leo Mckern, as Mr.Horace Rumpole, the lead character. Short stories, Novels and radio programmes soon followed. Horace Rumpole is a barrister, who enjoys defending clients in criminal court-in the Old Bailey. Many of the cases are legal aid cases and while Rumpole likes to defend and not plead guilty, he accepts the inevitability of that and sometimes emerges victorious thanks to his long and confusing question hours. Rumpole is fond of quoting Wordsworth and Shakespeare even in court and actually has only one proper victory-in a case he’s very proud of and calls the ‘Penge Bungalow Murders’. Rumpole is married to Ms Hilda, whom he calls ‘She who must be Obeyed’ :D, and they have one son.
The book- RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY , is a collection of stories including “Rumpole and the Younger Generation”, “Rumpole and the Alternative Society”, “Rumpole and the Honourable Member”, “Rumpole and the Married Lady”, “Rumpole and the Learned Friends” and “Rumpole and the Heavy Brigade”. I enjoyed reading all the stories thoroughly. The TV series is supposed to have been impeccable with Mckern playing the character of Horace Rumpole superbly well, and run for 17 years! Hope I get to watch it, and read the other books in the series sometime :).
